Read: “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35
When we give, we have the power to ignite hope and change lives - forever. Pastor Jeff Clark has said before that people don’t care what we know until they know that we care. We see this example lived out through the testimony of Jesus. As Jesus preached the message of eternal hope to others, he also provided tangible hope by feeding them (Matthew 14:13-21, Matthew 15:29-39) and healing them (Mark 10:46-52). As people’s physical needs were met, they were receptive to the words that Jesus had to say.
When we follow this example, we create space for others to receive the transformational story of Christ. Maybe they’re worried about where their next meal will come from. Or stressed about being able to make this month’s rent. When we care enough to slow down and notice, take the time to invest and meet a need, we not only lift a burden off someone else’s shoulders, we tear down walls around their heart. Through us, they see a genuine picture of what it really means to follow Jesus. And, when our lives match the message that we want them to hear, our words have meaning. Are you willing to give hope so that someone else might receive salvation? Ask God to help you notice ways that you can live a life that matches the message of the gospel.
Do: What can you and your family do this week to help meet the needs of someone else? This can be donating to a food bank, collecting toys and clothes to take to a shelter, giving this month’s allowance to a charity, etc.
