Read: Philippians 2:13
I have often wondered how the Israelites — who experienced miraculous wonders of God, including the parting of the Red Sea — could turn around a few chapters later and create a golden calf to worship. Honestly, I find myself thinking, “Wake up, people! Will you ever learn?” Their sin seems so obvious because it’s manifested in the form of a golden calf, but Pastor Jeff reminded us on Sunday that our hearts are “idol factories,” too. How could the Israelites have been so blind? How are we still so blind?
Bull worship was common in Old Testament times. To the Israelites, fashioning and worshiping a golden calf felt normal because it was relevant in their culture. What golden calves does culture tempt us to worship today? Maybe it’s our careers, education, achievements, the perfect family, perfect kids, the right memberships, the perfect image on Facebook? An addiction we try to hide? Maybe our calf is so commonplace in today’s culture that it’s hard to pinpoint? Regardless, if we’re not passionately pursuing and praising GOD, we’re passionately pursuing and praising something else.
We were designed to worship. We have a need to worship. And we have plenty of little gods to choose from, but there’s only one God who abundantly fulfills and never disappoints us. If you find it challenging to put God first, ask Him to work in you; ask Him to give you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.
Pray: Thank you, God, for your new mercies every day, even when I chase after the things of this world. Show me the idols in my life. Work in me to give me the desire and power to passionately pursue You with all of my heart, mind and soul. In Jesus’ name, amen.
