Read: “And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” Isaiah 58:11
When we decide to follow Jesus, we can sometimes get a false idea of what it will be like. God wants us to be happy, so life should be smooth sailing from then on, right? Here’s the thing - following Jesus looks a lot different from having a genie in a bottle who grants you the ideal soulmate, your dream job and perfect children.
What following Jesus does offer is the promise of living life with a purpose that fulfills us and access to immeasurable joy. Following Jesus, also means we receive unique gifts to fulfill our purpose and the blessing of enjoying His created gifts - such as family, friends, food. But, when we elevate any those created things above God the Creator, what we’re really doing is worshipping a false god that can never fulfill us. Take a few minutes today and look at where you’re spending the majority of your time. Are you making time to grow in your relationship with Christ, or are you filling it with things that will ultimately leave you empty?
Plan to take five extra minutes a day this week to invest in your relationship with Christ. It could be listening to a favorite worship song and writing about how it speaks to you, taking time with your family to discuss what you’ve all been learning in your personal Bible time, etc.
Pray: God, even when life gets tough, when I long for it to be easy, thank you for reminding me that my satisfaction is found in you. No matter what happens, I know that you will take care of me, and I don’t have to worry. As I seek to grow my relationship with you this week, speak to me clearly so that I can follow the direction you have for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
