Week Three | Day 2

Read: “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” Matthew 19:26

Are you an Eagle, a Rebel, a Dawg? A democrat or republican? Professional or laborer? Vegan or meat-eater? Traditionalist or charismatic? Baby Boomer or Millennial? No one ever likes to admit it, but many times, even in the pursuit of something good or fun, we can find ourselves surrounded only by people who act and feel mostly like us, creating a world where we avoid those who don’t fit inside our box. Some of us have defined our box by our age group, social standing, marital status, denomination, or political party. Why is that?

Do we fear we won’t be welcomed, so we build walls to avoid getting hurt? Maybe in striving to maintain our status in the “right” crowd, we build barriers to keep others out. Or maybe, for many of us, it’s just simply that we feel validated around others who are like us. No matter the reason, we have to decide to be open and vulnerable in order to build unfamiliar relationships. We have to choose to push ourselves out of our safety zone in order to love ALL people - just as Christ did.

Why? Because the result is well worth the risk. Jesus lives on the other side of our comfort and safety net. The fullness of his promises happen when we get outside the box we’ve created, waking our hearts up to discover the joy-filled journey that comes with following Jesus. Are you ready to experience deeper, richer relationships?

Pray: God, help me take a look at my life. If I have built up barriers to keep others out, help me tear them down. I am ready to step out of my comfort zone and build relationships with others who may be different than me. Let me show others your love as I get to know them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
