Context: As Paul was suffering in prison, he wanted to ensure that the Philippian church did not shrink back in their faith. Instead, they were to keep striving together without fear of those who opposed the message. In this way, they would conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel. 

Summary: This passage draws out at least three main aspects of what it means to live a life worthy of the gospel. First, there is the call to stand firm together while fearlessly striving for the faith of the gospel. Second, not to be surprised by suffering. Third, to be engaged in the fight of faith (like Paul).

Discussion: What words stand out to you in this passage? Consider the charge to stand firm. What does this mean to you? What does this look like practically in a believer’s life? What might it look like to fearlessly strive together for the faith of the gospel?

Discussion: What are the two things that have been granted by God in the life of the believer? We likely all agree that salvation is by grace (granted), but do we also believe that the opposition or suffering we face as Christians has been granted by grace? How should this impact the way we view the resistance to our faith we often encounter? Should we be surprised by it? 

Read: Verse 30 

Discussion: What does it look like to be engaged in gospel conflict? Likely, Paul is referring to the fight to bring people to faith in Christ. This is so often a long-term struggle. How are you fighting to do this? Where do you need encouragement in this area? 

Conclusion: This passage shows us a wonderful picture of living a life worthy of the gospel as we stand firm, strive together, and contend for the faith. Spend some time praying for wisdom and grace to live this out.
