Bylaws Updates – Venture Church

In 2009, when First Baptist Church of Hattiesburg, Inc. was established as an incorporated entity, we were a much different church than we are today. We were still meeting in our downtown Hattiesburg location as a single-campus church with approximately 1,000 people in attendance weekly. Today, we have 3 campus locations and about 3 times the number people in weekly attendance. God has faithfully blessed our obedience to His vision to be a “church for the unchurched.”

The following proposed updates to the bylaws will further align us with that vision, clarifying and simplifying the internal aspects of governance for our church. The proposed updates include:

  • Venture Church – In 2013, we started doing business as Venture Church, which needs to be reflected in the bylaws.
  • Venture Church is led by Elders, as prescribed in the Bible. Deacons in the early church served the church and the community at the direction of the Elders. Currently at Venture Church, our Guest Services teams (parking lot, coffee bar, hosts, greeters, etc.) serve our church to meet the needs of our people and guests, and Growth Groups serve our communities to meet needs as they arise. In the past 2+ years, through natural disasters, multiple events (Christmas, Easter, Camp Venture) and weekly worship experiences, Venture's Guest Services teams and Growth Groups have served Venture Church - not deacons. Consequently, the structure of Venture Church is simplified by eliminating the organizational logistics of a component that is not being utilized.
  • Clarifications to the process of holding a business meeting across multiple campus locations and worship experience times to ensure that the vote taken at each campus is properly acknowledged and accounted for.

Bylaws Updates – Foundation of the First Baptist Church of Hattiesburg Foundation, Inc.

The proposed revisions include providing the Board of Trustees the ability to make decisions, such as investment policy issues, in a more timely manner, as well as clarifying and simplifying the appointment of members to the Board of Trustees, among others.
