Cling Like Your Life Depends on It

Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.

“I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely.” – Psalm 63:8

Let’s talk about ladders. Specifically, the kind that looks sturdy—until you’re halfway up, changing a smoke detector, suddenly questioning all your life choices. You’re standing there, one foot shaking, one hand gripping a rung, thinking, “I really should’ve kept that gym membership.”

But here’s the truth: the ladder didn’t get weaker. It’s still capable of holding you. You just forgot the key part—you have to hold on.

David understood this. In Psalm 63:8, he’s not lounging comfortably—he’s in the wilderness. Literally. Probably being hunted. Possibly by his own son. Either way, not a great day. Yet even in that mess, he declares:

“I cling to You; Your strong right hand holds me securely.”

Translation? God’s got this. He’s holding me. He’s still strong. He’s still faithful.

David makes two points.

First: God is capable of holding you.

No conditions. No exceptions.

Think about the people who learned this the hard way:

  • Moses: Rejected by Pharaoh and even his own people—God still held him.
  • Noah: Laughed at by everyone he knew—God still covered him.
  • Job: Lost everything—yet God held him steady.
  • Paul: Thorn in his side, shipwrecks, jail—God was still there, still holding.

So yes, God’s got you. The "ladder" can hold.

Second: You have to cling.

The ladder only works if you grab the rungs.

David didn’t say, “God holds me while I scroll, binge, and ghost my prayer life.”

He said, “I cling to You.”

There’s a part you play. Holding on isn’t passive—it’s personal.

I had a buddy in college who insisted his gas tank was “mostly full,” based on nothing but good vibes. Spoiler: he ran out of gas on the interstate. His trust was in the wrong thing, and it couldn’t hold.

Too often, we cling to relationships, income, ambition, or comfort, and then act surprised when those things collapse.

So ask yourself: What are you really clinging to?

Is it strong enough to hold you when life gets heavy?

Can it stand when relationships fail, the job changes, or the plans unravel?

Here’s the promise: God can. But you’ve got to grab hold.

Don’t wait for a crisis to test your grip. Cling to God now—in your time, your trust, your choices.

Don’t just admire the ladder. Get on it. Grip it tight—because He’s already holding you.

Cling like your life depends on it—because, in every way that matters, it does.

Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:

Use the S.O.A.P. Method to study God’s Word.

  • SCRIPTURE: What stands out to you in today’s passage?
  • OBSERVATION: What is this text saying? What is the context? How does it fit with the verses before and after it? Are there any commands, instructions, or promises?
  • APPLICATION: How can you apply this verse to your life? What does this mean today? What is God saying to you?
  • PRAYER: Respond to the passage in prayer. Ask God to help you apply this truth to your life and spend some time listening to what He may be telling you.
