How Great Is Our God

How Great Is Our God

Begin with two minutes of silence and stillness before God.

If you’re a millennial like me, you probably grew up in a youth group listening to Chris Tomlin. And one of his biggest hits was “How Great Is Our God.” It’s a truth we sing easily, but do we really know how great He is?

Psalm 135 and 136 give us what I’d call a Spotify Wrapped version of God’s greatness. And with zero offense to Mr. Tomlin, these chapters lay out the greatness of God in a way no song ever could. These psalms walk us through the highlight reel of creation: the heavens, the earth, the seas, the clouds, and every living thing.

Honestly, the psalm could end right there, and there would be zero debate about who the real G.O.A.T. is, and sorry, it’s not LeBron James. The God who imagined the universe into existence is unmatched, unrivaled, and unequaled. But the psalm doesn’t stop at creation.

It reminds us of God’s active power in history:

  • He freed His people from Egypt.
  • He struck down nations.
  • He defeated every “little g” god.
  • He protected, defended, and guided His people.
  • He proved Himself faithful again and again.

This is not a distant God. This is a personal, involved, intentional God. And here’s what amazes me most: As great as He is… He desires a relationship with us. He doesn’t need us. He wants us. The Creator of the universe wants to walk with you, speak with you, and know you.

Psalm 136 summarizes everything with one line: “His faithful love endures forever.”

The psalm repeats that phrase 26 times. And honestly, we could repeat it: a thousand times, every day of our lives, with every breath we have left……and it still wouldn’t be enough.

Because His love truly does endure forever:

  • He feeds
  • He rescues
  • He remembers
  • He leads
  • He creates
  • He protects
  • He loves

And He doesn’t grow tired of loving us. He doesn’t grow frustrated with loving us. He doesn’t grow weary of loving us. His love doesn’t expire. It endures forever.

May we never let the mundane rhythm of everyday life dull our sense of wonder. May we never forget that the God who formed galaxies also formed you. And may we never lose sight of the truth: How great is our God, and how incredible it is that this great God desires a relationship with us.

Take two minutes to reflect in silence.

Reflection:

Use the S.O.A.P. Method to study God's Word.

  • SCRIPTURE: What stands out to you in today's passage?
  • OBSERVATION: What is this text saying? What is the context? How does it fit with the verses before and after it? Are there any commands, instructions, or promises?
  • APPLICATION: How can you apply this verse to your life? What does this mean today? What is God saying to you?
  • PRAYER: Respond to the passage in prayer. Ask God to help you apply this truth to your life and spend some time listening to what He may be telling you.

New Year, New Bible Reading Plan

At Venture Church, providing quality Daily Essential tools for spiritual development is a priority we are passionate about. As a result, we provided a Bible Reading Plan in 2020, Daily Devos in 2021, and Family Devos in 2023. We are always looking for ways to better serve the church through resources that assist in the growth of your faith. Thank you for supporting us and joining us on this journey!

This year, we have some exciting additions to our Daily Essential tools. In 2026, Venture Church will begin offering two Bible Reading Plans. Both of these plans will be delivered to your inbox in a weekly summary, replacing daily emails. Scripture, Daily Devos, Family Devos, videos, and relevant links for the week will be delivered in a single, easy-to-access email each Monday morning.

The first plan will be the New Testament Bible Reading Plan, a 5-day-a-week plan that leads readers from Matthew to Revelation in a year. Daily Devos and Family Devos will continue to help readers dig deeper into God’s Word. And this year, we are adding audio recordings of the Daily Devos for on-the-go listening!

The second Bible Reading Plan option will be the One-Year Bible Reading Plan. This 7-day-a-week plan will guide readers through the entire Bible in 365 days. If you’re looking to read all of the Word this year, this plan is for you! Though Daily Devos will not be connected to this plan, we are excited to provide introduction videos for each Book of the Bible as an additional resource.

Join us January 1st to start a new Bible Reading Plan in the New Year!
