Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.
“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” Philippians 1:27a
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves.” Philippians 2:3
In a time when people are praised for self-promotion, Paul reminds believers that true greatness is found in humility, unity, and purpose. To live “worthy of the gospel” is to live like Jesus, putting others first and keeping God's mission in view. Sometimes it isn't easy to make the right choices. Showing humility in place of being prideful is sometimes uncomfortable. The more you choose humility, the closer you are to becoming more Christlike.
A Life Worthy of the Gospel Is Anchored in Purpose
Paul wrote Philippians while imprisoned, yet his tone is one of joy and purpose. He reminds the church that no matter the circumstance, our call is to live in a way that reflects the Gospel. When we have experienced hard times and darker days, we must draw strength from remembering what God has done for us when we drew closer to Him. Walking in righteousness and faith demonstrates how you draw strength from God even if and even when…
“To live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Phil. 1:21)
Is my life pointing people to Christ even when things aren’t going my way?
A Life Worthy of the Gospel Values Humility Over Status
Paul urges believers to be like-minded, united in love, and humble in heart. This is not a call to think less of ourselves, but to think of ourselves less. Just like with the woman at the well, God did not point out her flaws to make her feel less than. He told her that He knew who she was and the struggles of her past to demonstrate to believers that His acceptance knows no bounds. He invites everyone, regardless of their past, to sit with Him. We are all welcome to the family!
“In humility, value others above yourselves.” (Phil. 2:3)
“Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus...” (Phil. 2:5)
Do I lead with humility or do I seek to be right, praised, or in control?
A Life Worthy of the Gospel Shines in a Dark World
When we live with humility and purpose, we stand out...not for attention, but for Christ. We must strive to do acts of service and ministry to others without having to be seen doing those things. Serving God through what we do for others is true servanthood. Being a kingdom worker means loving those who are sometimes harder to love.
“Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.” (Phil. 2:15)
Am I bringing light to dark places through my attitude and actions?
Living worthy of the Gospel doesn’t require a platform or perfection. It starts with humility in the heart and a willingness to serve others like Jesus did. When the church embraces this mindset, we shine bright with the hope of Christ. What ministries can you dive into to show a willingness to serve? How can God use you to make a difference in the lives of others?
Lord, help me live a life that reflects Your Gospel. Teach me to walk in humility, value others, and stay focused on the mission You’ve given me. Let my life shine with Your light and love. In Your name, Amen.
Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
