The Eternal Hope of Christ's Return

The Eternal Hope of Christ's Return

Author: Austin Sines
Dec 29, 2023 | Revelation 22

Begin with 2 minutes of silence and stillness before God.

The passage begins with the depiction of the river of the water of life, flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb. This life-giving river signifies the abundant and eternal provision of God's grace, bringing healing and sustenance to all who partake. The tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, reflects the eternal blessings and sustenance available to God's redeemed people.

Revelation 22 highlights the permanence of God's presence with His children. There will be no more darkness, pain, or curse, for God Himself will dwell among His people. The promise of seeing His face and reigning with Him forever underscores the immeasurable joy and fulfillment found in eternal communion with God.

The chapter concludes with Jesus affirming His imminent return: "Surely, I am coming soon." This declaration serves as both a promise and an exhortation for believers to live expectantly and prepared for His coming. The response, "Come, Lord Jesus!" uttered by believers, expresses the earnest longing for Christ's return and the consummation of His Kingdom.

Revelation 22 inspires believers to live in eager anticipation of Christ's return. It challenges us to live each day with a sense of readiness and faithfulness, knowing that our eternal hope rests in Christ alone. This hope empowers us to live boldly for His Kingdom, sharing the Gospel and living in obedience to His Word.

Furthermore, this passage urges us to echo the cry, "Come, Lord Jesus!" It's a prayerful longing for His return, a yearning for the fulfillment of His promises, and a desire to dwell eternally in His presence. It prompts us to share this hope with others, inviting them to partake in the eternal blessings found only in Christ.

Take 2 minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:
  • As we reflect on Revelation 22, let us embrace the hope of Christ's return. May it ignite within us a fervent desire to live faithfully, sharing His love and truth until He comes again. Let our lives echo the prayer, "Come, Lord Jesus," as we eagerly await His glorious and eternal reign.
  • Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of Christ's imminent return. Help us to live each day in readiness and anticipation of His coming. May our lives bear witness to Your love and truth, and may we eagerly share the hope of His return with others. Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly. In Your holy name, Amen.

Family Devo: Revelations 22

By: Kaylee Collins

When partnering with your family to know, love, and follow Jesus, we strive to create and share content filtered by the Head-Heart-Hands model.

Head: the knowledge of God and His Word | Heart: the personal connection from scripture | Hands: a missional mindset

Head

In this final chapter of Revelation, John describes a crystal-clear river with the water of life. This river flows from the throne of God, and on each side of the river, there is a tree of life-bearing leaves used for medicine to heal the nations. We are told that there will no longer be a curse on anything and there will be no night because God will shine down on His people. We are also told that Jesus is coming soon and those who obey the words of prophecy will be blessed. For these people will be allowed to enter the city and eat from the tree of life and they will reign forever and ever.

Heart

Can you imagine what it will be like when Christ returns? How exciting it is to know that Jesus is coming soon not only to be with us but to bring His reward to us as well. For all wickedness and evil will be no more and we will be able to eat the fruit from the tree of life. As followers of Christ, we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus is someday coming back to be with us for all of eternity. For He is “the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, The Beginning and the End”.

Hands

Take a moment and think about how you can prepare your heart and mind for Jesus’ return.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for giving us a glimpse into what is to come and that we can look forward to one day being with You. Help us to prepare our hearts for Your return and to stay focused on You and on the plan that You have for us here on Earth. In Jesus' name, amen.
