Read Colossians 3:1-2

HEAD

Have you ever helped a friend pick up his crayons after they were spilled? Or gently encouraged a teammate after a tough game? That’s a way of showing kindness, and it is one of the things Paul talks about in Colossians 3. He reminds us that when we believe in Jesus, we are like a new person. It’s not okay to do things just because others are. We must closely examine our actions and choices and determine whether they distract us from God or bring us closer to Him. If our actions don’t add to His kingdom, we could find more productive things to do.

Paul even has some rules for the family in this passage! It may be hard to imagine, but families during this time were much different than what we see now. Paul encouraged them to have better relationships, too. He said wives and husbands should love and respect each other. Children should obey their parents, and parents should be kind, patient, and encouraging with their children. Ultimately, Paul wanted everyone to show love, respect, and kindness at home because that is where following Jesus begins!

HEART

So what should our new life in Christ look like? You should think about your words before you say them. Make sure they are appropriate and would be pleasing to Jesus. Also, consider the things you do. Do they add value to your walk with God, or do they distract you from Him? Make sure you choose wisely, and when it gets hard to do that, pray with God. He can guide you through tough times and decisions if you seek Him.

HANDS

Dear Jesus, thank You for making me new. Help me to put away the things that hurt others and to fill my life with love, kindness, and patience. Show me how to do everything for You, not just for people. Give me the courage to share Your love and wisdom in how I talk to others. Thank You for always forgiving me and helping me grow. Amen.
