Head

When I was a kid, I had a favorite movie I loved to watch. It was a children’s movie—fun and lighthearted—but there was one particular part that scared my little sister. There was nothing wrong with the movie itself, but I chose not to watch it when she was around. I made that decision out of love for her, because I cared about how it made her feel.

In 1 Corinthians 8, Paul gives similar advice to the believers in Corinth. Even though he wasn’t talking about movies, his message was the same: Love others enough to put their needs before your own.

Heart

Even if we know something is okay to do, loving others is more important than proving we’re right. I love the phrase,

“Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.”

If something we’re doing causes confusion or harms someone else’s relationship with Jesus, we’re called to care more about them than about our own freedoms or opinions. That’s what it means to live with Christ-like love.

Hands

This week, look for a moment when you could do something—but choose not to—because you care about how it might affect someone else.

At the end of the week, talk together as a family:

  • What happened?
  • What did it feel like to choose love over being right?
  • How did that choice build someone up?

Prayer: God, thank You for giving us freedom. Help us to use that freedom with love. Teach us to care more about others than about being right. Help us to build others up and never cause them to stumble. We love You! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
