Read Proverbs 19:23

“The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” Proverbs 19:23

HEAD

The “fear of the Lord” in this verse doesn’t mean being scared of God like we’re afraid of a storm or a villain in a movie. It means honoring God, respecting Him, and taking His Word seriously. It’s about recognizing that God is powerful, holy, and wise—and that He knows what’s best for us.

When we live with that kind of reverence and trust, it leads to a life that is full, peaceful, and secure. This doesn’t mean we’ll never have problems, but it does mean we won’t be overwhelmed by fear or worry, because we trust in God’s care.

The verse says we can “rest content, untouched by trouble,” which means God gives peace on the inside, even when things are hard on the outside.

HEART

This verse reminds us that living God’s way brings peace to our hearts. When we honor God with our choices, we don’t have to live in guilt or fear of consequences.

For example, if we’re honest instead of lying, we often avoid a lot of trouble later. When we forgive others instead of holding a grudge, we live with less bitterness.

It makes me think of when I used to get up in the middle of the night to take my dog Ollie outside. The room would be pitch dark, and I couldn’t see him. I’d use the flashlight on my phone to help me see. God’s wisdom is like that light, showing us the safe path. When we fear the Lord, we trust His guidance instead of just doing things our own way.

HANDS

Here are a few ways to live out the fear of the Lord:

  • Obey God’s Word, even when it’s hard (“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” Luke 11:28).
  • Pray and ask for wisdom before making decisions.
  • Tell the truth, even when it’s difficult.
  • Show kindness and forgive quickly.
  • As a family, talk about one way each of you can trust God more this week.
