Head

This week, we are in the book of Proverbs. Proverbs is a book that teaches us to be wise; to make good decisions and live a life that is pleasing to God. Proverbs was written by a king named Solomon. Soon after Solomon became king, God appeared to him. God told Solomon to ask for anything, and He would give it to him. Pause for a second and think about what you would ask for. Would you ask for a shiny new car, a palace, a long vacation, money, or a new puppy? Well, Solomon had a different idea. Instead of riches or valuables, he asked God for wisdom and knowledge! 2 Chronicles 1:11-12 says that the Lord was pleased with Solomon’s request and gave him knowledge and wisdom. Solomon wanted to teach people how to live a good life by making wise and smart choices. He wrote down the things that he learned, and this is how we got the book of Proverbs!

Heart

Solomon tells us that the first step to being wise and having knowledge is to respect and listen to God. Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” This verse is not saying that we should be scared of God, but rather be amazed by His power! When we recognize His mighty power, His rule over heaven and earth, and His ability to be with all of us all the time, we are filled with awe and amazement. That is the kind of fear and respect that the Bible is instructing us to have. God wants us to be wise, listen to His word, and make good choices. You can ask God to give you wisdom and knowledge, just like Solomon did!

Hands

Think of a time when you were faced with a tough choice. Talk about how God gave you wisdom to make the right decision.

Prayer: God, thank You for giving us the Bible so that we can be wise. Please help me to listen to You and make good decisions every day. I love You, Lord! Amen.
