Read 2 Peter 1:5-8
Head
Welcome to the book of 2 Peter! Did you know you have a calling as a believer? A calling is a job God gives you to live for Him. Peter gives us a list of all the things we should use to live that calling out.
Read 2 Peter 1:5-8 again.
Let’s list them out. Faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love. Our faith in Jesus is first on the list and for good reason! When our faith is strong in who God is and what Jesus did on the cross, the rest of these things come BECAUSE of our faith.
Heart
We live out the list Peter gave us because it shows our faith to others. Read verses 8-9. Verse 8 tells us that if we have all the qualities on the list and they are growing, we won’t be “ineffective or unfruitful” in knowing Jesus. Verse 9 goes on to tell us that if we don’t have these qualities, we are basically blind and have forgotten what Jesus did for us. Going ahead to verse 10, it tells us that we need to practice what’s on the list, and if we do that, we won’t fall.
Hands
So, let's practice! Write out the list on a piece of paper. Define each one together so that everybody understands what it means. Come up with examples and put them into practice this week. Do them as often as you can to grow in the knowledge of your Savior and so others can see Him in you!
Prayer: God, thank You for Your Word, which gives us directions to live for You. Help me to live out this calling You have on my life to bring others to You. Use me. Speak through me. Amen.
