Reading Plan: Luke 15
Amazing Grace Author: Brandy Stewart
Chapter 15 starts with the Pharisees whining because they didn’t understand why Jesus would associate with sinners. He had to give three different examples, or parables because they kept missing the truth. The truth is that God is all about bringing those who are far away from Him, or lost, into a relationship with Him. The Pharisees had gotten so caught up in the trappings of their religion that they failed to see the relationship that God longs to have with His people.I love the continual theme of celebration throughout the chapter. When the lost sheep is found He says, “There will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” When the lost coin is found it says, “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” And finally, the father says about his son who has returned home, “Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. So they began to celebrate." Can you fully grasp the truth that God and all of heaven celebrate you? There’s nothing you can do to earn it. You’ll never be good enough on your own. He just wants you to come to Him. My husband said this chapter always reminds him of the song “Amazing Grace.” Grace is being given something that you don’t necessarily deserve or earn. Our salvation is an act of God’s grace, and it is truly amazing. Let’s end the week meditating on the simple but profound truths found in the first two verses of this old hymn. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found. Was blind, but now I see. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed!
Reflections:
- Is there someone in your life who you know needs a little grace from you?
- In what ways do you know you need to show yourself more grace?
- Do you regularly take time to thank God for the grace He has given you? Spend some time in prayer thanking God today!
