September 7, 2021: The Holy Spirit is your advocate.

Reading Plan:
John 14

Our Thoughts:
The Holy Spirit is YOUR advocate. When I hear of an advocate I think of a child's advocate - someone who "advocates," or publicly fights for the best interest of the child who they are representing. For instance, if a child is living in a condition that is not in their best interest, then their advocate will do everything possible to ensure the child is cared for well.
The word advocate derives from the Latin word advocare, which means to call to one's aid. In other words, an advocate is the one who helps when there is a need. This is good news for you and me because we live in a broken world which keeps us in constant need of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. The point is, without an advocate, we are hopeless.
The good news for us is that God recognizes our need for an advocate. When He sent Jesus to earth for 33 years Jesus saw firsthand the depravity of man. And praise God for his attention to detail. You see, in John 14, Jesus tells his disciples that the Holy Spirit is coming to permanently dwell within the hearts of his children. The Holy Spirit is our omnipresent help. Or in more simplistic language, he is always with us.
The Holy Spirit is your personal advocate. He is fighting for you, in you, and through you. You may be thinking, "Well, what is the catch?" The catch is, we have to learn to listen to the Holy Spirit. Even though we have the Holy Spirit in us, we still have to work on learning to pay attention to His presence in our lives. And as we listen to the Holy Spirit, we will constantly see just how much he advocates on our behalf.

More Questions:
What is one area of your life where you are weak?
How can you begin to allow the Holy Spirit to influence you in this area?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to be my Advocate. I am in great need of more of you and less of me. Help me today to submit the weak area(s) of my life to you. I am here, not to live in accordance with my flesh, but to live through the power of your Holy Spirit. Thank you for your consistent presence in my life. In the name of Jesus, Amen!
