Head

Whenever two or more people come together to do something—whether it’s a school project, a work assignment, or even just playing a game—there’s going to be some room for disagreement. That’s just how it is. God made each of us unique, and with that uniqueness comes different opinions and perspectives.

My grandmother used to say, “Three can’t play together.” As a child, I didn’t understand what she meant. But now, as an adult, I get it! Even among close family and friends, we won’t always agree. And when you’re dealing with people you don’t know well—or at all—it becomes even harder to keep the peace.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1:10:

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

Okay, Paul... Do you realize what you’re asking? Are we really supposed to agree with one another and be perfectly united in our thoughts and words? Is that even possible?

Heart

It might sound unrealistic to think, let alone expect, that believers would agree on everything. But Paul wasn’t talking about agreeing on every little detail. What he was saying is that we should all agree on who we follow.

The church he was writing to had started arguing over which teacher or leader was the best. People were dividing themselves based on their favorite preachers or teaching styles. Paul wanted them to stop fighting about which human leader they followed and remember the most important thing: They were all supposed to follow Jesus.

That makes a whole lot more sense! We don’t need to argue about which pastor is better or what preaching style we prefer. The only thing that really matters is who we are following—and it should always be Jesus.

Hands

As a family, try putting together a puzzle or building something with blocks. Each piece is different, but all of them are needed for the whole thing to be complete.

Just like in the church, each person is unique, but we’re all part of the same body. The process may look different for everyone, but the goal is the same: unity in following Jesus.

PrayerGod, thank You for making us one family through Your Son, Jesus. Help us to love one another, forgive one another, and stick together—even though You made each of us different on purpose. Remind us that we follow You and You alone. We love You! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
