Head

"But you, O Lord, will rule forever. Your fame will endure to every generation." Psalm 102:12

Psalm 102 is a prayer of someone who is suffering. It is thought to have been written at a time when Jerusalem was in ruins. The author begs for the presence of God and expresses agony over physical illness and the agony of enemies coming after them. In verse 11, the author says, "My days are like a lengthening shadow, and I wither away like grass." The author is definitely honest with God about how he is feeling. He is not hiding his negative feelings, nor is he pretending to be okay.

There is a shift in tone starting with verse 12. The author acknowledges God as everlasting. He shifts his focus from his circumstances to what is true about God. He makes a choice to focus on God's promises of favor on Jerusalem and that God will be exalted among all nations. Even if he can't see the victory now, the author trusts God's character and promises while still expressing his feelings to God.

Heart

Do you relate to the author of this Psalm? Have you ever felt hopeless and wondered if God was there? It is possible to feel hopeless and choose to trust God. It honors God when we are honest with him about how we feel and still allow him to fix our eyes on his character and his promises.

Hands

Write out your prayer. Be honest with God about how you feel about your circumstances. Ask the hard questions. Then allow God to guide your prayer into praising him for his majesty, his love, and his grace.

Prayer: Dear God, there's a lot about life that I don't understand. There's so much in this world that is just not right. But you, Lord, are enthroned forever. Your love continues. Your promises are true. You will do what You say you will do. You are doing a new work in me and through me. I trust You. In Jesus's name, Amen.
