Read 1 Thessalonians
Head:
Think about a coach who really believes in her team. She doesn’t just teach the game; she cheers for the players, helps them get better, and encourages them when they mess up. The coach always wants her team to succeed, not just in the game, but in life. Paul was like that with the Thessalonians. He was their “spiritual coach,” cheering them on to live for Jesus.
In chapter one, Paul tells the Thessalonian believers he’s thankful for their strong faith, loving actions, and hope in Jesus. Even though life was hard, they didn’t give up, and their example encouraged believers everywhere. Later, in chapter two, he reminds them that he cared for them like a loving parent and taught them God’s Word with gentleness. He worked hard so he would not be a burden, and he celebrated that they accepted God’s message as truth.
Heart:
When we read this text written so long ago in a place so different from anything we’ve ever seen, it may seem difficult to apply these principles to our lives. However, if we really think about it, Paul was simply disciplining the Thessalonians, and that is something we are all called to do, too. You can begin discipling! Continue to learn about Jesus and study His Word to grow in your faith. Show that faith to others with your actions and words, and remember to share what you have learned with your friends. It doesn’t have to be big, hard, or scary–just live as you’ve been instructed and you have a great start!
Hands:
Dear Jesus, thank You for the people who encourage and teach me about You. Please help me be a good example and cheer others on in their faith. Show me how to live in a way that points people to You. Amen.
