Reading Plan:
Hebrews 11
Our Thoughts:
Hebrews 11 has been referred to by many as the “Hall of Faith” in scripture. The writer of this letter recounts the lives of many “heroes” of the Bible and how their faith in God lead to extraordinary places. Abraham, led by his faith, followed God to destinations literally unknown to him. Moses was protected as a baby by the faith of his mother, and his own faith drove him to lead the Israelites out of captivity in Egypt. The people of Israel were strengthened by faith as they crossed the Red Sea on dry ground and followed God into the wilderness. And these are just a few examples.
I don’t know about you, but when I read through these stories, I’m reminded of my own inadequacies more than anything else. These kinds of heroes of faith might still exist, but I am far from one. God reminded me that the point of these stories is not to praise the power of the person, but the power of faith itself. “Faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, and made the weak strong and ready for war.” Hebrews 11:33-34. The question is not what are you capable of, but rather, what is your faith capable of? More specifically, what is your God capable of that you have faith in?
“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” Hebrews 11:6. Faith, or belief, in God is the first step in drawing near to Him. Did you notice the promise that God rewards those who seek him? I don’t believe the writer of Hebrews has the type of reward in mind that we typically think of first - money, possessions, fame, glory, etc.
The reward for those who seek God is that they find God. “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7.
It is in the presence of God that the heroes of faith are found, because in His presence life is not about you anymore. In His presence, we catch a glimpse of the perfection we were created for in Heaven. You don’t have to be perfect or even have a perfect faith. Rather, choose today to have faith in a perfect God.
More Questions:
Have you ever felt inadequate or incapable? Why?
What do you believe about God? Write it down.
Prayer:
Lord, you are great and worthy to be praised. Today, my faith in you might lead me to difficult tasks but I know you will give me the boldness and ability to take the necessary steps. Help me to live in your presence today.
