Reading Plan:
Acts 13
Our Thoughts:
Sometimes it only takes one person to speak truth in a way that changes everything. I like to think of those moments as “suddenly moments." These are the moments when a before and after marker is placed in our story. There is something about truly understanding that the hope promised through Jesus is available for us personally. When I think back on all the mistakes I have made, I can quickly return to a place where shame once lived, but I am also reminded of the place where hope was born. That living hope is what draws me to Jesus daily.
Looking back at Paul’s life in Acts 13, we see him speak of Jesus in a way that clearly reveals he has personally experienced God's forgiveness and hope. Because he was willing to speak up, Paul is able to share his “suddenly moments" with many who were willing to listen. He weaves a thread of facts through their minds that brings about a sense of curiosity and a hunger to hear more about the grace of God. There was a contagious spirit among the people that resulted in almost the entire city of Pisidian Antioch showing up to hear more of what Paul had to say. Along with so much excitement, we also find a group of Jews who are filled with jealousy. When jealousy shows up, it has the power to destroy everything. We can pinpoint in verse 45 how jealousy was the beginning of the abuse Paul began to receive.
Can you relate? Have you been on the receiving end of jealousy, defending yourself from the haters? Jealousy is a form of abuse that can have devastating effects on a person over time. Jesus wants you to live in freedom with the ability to stay focused on him and the opportunities He provides daily. This is impossible to do with a mind distracted and consumed by the havoc of jealousy. Over time, if jealously is not dealt with, you begin to lose a piece of who you were meant to be. It may require hard conversations and possibly even severing relationships, but anything that consumes your life and competes for the place meant for God alone is worth ending. Once you are free from those toxic relationships, you will have a “suddenly moment" of your own, where you begin to flourish in a life filled with hope - a life that you were made to live.
More Questions:
How would you have reacted to the persecution faced by Paul?
How has hope played a part in your story?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to always place my hope in You. I pray that You keep me focused on You alone and rid my mind of any distractions from what is most important in life. Help me to always have an increasing hunger for more of You and never forget all that You have done for me.
